The new live-action film version of Tatsuo Nitta’s The Quiet Don (Shizukanaru Don – Yakuza Side Story) manga was announced by the production team on Wednesday. To promote the movie, a new trailer and poster were released online this week.
There are four episodes planned for the project, the first two of which will debut in Japanese theatres on May 12 and the other two the following week. Riuji Yoshizaki is co-writing the script with Kento Yamaguchi, who is also in charge of the project’s direction and script.

The Quiet Don Manga
Shizuya Kond, the sole child of a yakuza leader, leaves the family business to pursue a career as a knickers designer in Nitta’s original manga. Kond accepts to take over the yakuza organization when his father is killed, but only if he continues his day job.
This requires him to keep his illicit activities hidden from his coworkers, including a colleague designer who he is in love with. The original manga has 108 collected book volumes and appeared in Jitsugyo no Nihon Sha’s Manga Sunday magazine from 1989 to 2012. The manga was initially released in English by NEC BIGLOBE.
The manga has already been turned into two live-action films from 2000 and 2009, a live-action television show from 1994, and an intermittent live-action video series from 1991 to 2001. In 1991, an OVA adaptation was also influenced by it.
