Being one of the legendary anime of the 90s, Rurouni Kenshin will be going through a remake. It is not something unusual looking at the recent reboot trend. The reboot becomes a parade to the point that we can make a list of many reboot anime in recent decades; Hunter x Hunter, Fruit Basket, Dororo, Shaman King, etc.
Just like the anime above, this anime series was arguably one of the best historical anime of the 1990s era. Even though the reboot anime usually gets a good review from fans, can the remake beat the success of its 90s version? Let’s dive in, shall we?
Rurouni Kenshin 2023 Release Date
The official announced Rurouni Kenshin’s reboot back on December 19, 2021. It feels like a bolt to the blue knowing that their last movie adaptation was released six months prior.
Many assume that it will adapt the Hokkaido revival arc which is the newest arc in Rurouni Kenshin manga. Alas, the news said that the anime will be a reboot of the original animation which will not adapt the manga series in full.
Then, the news was void until late September when they released the first PV, staff, cast, character design, and the release year. Fans should be waiting patiently because the anime adaptation will be in 2023. However, the exact release date of Rurouni Kenshin is still TBA.
Rurouni Kenshin Staff and Cast
The promotional video above was released on December 18, 2022. Unlike the first trailer of the series, it leaks the voice lines of Sanosuke and Yahiko. Arguably, the standard of the visual graphics is fair for reboot anime. Surely the “newer” anime fans will find it enjoyable while the “older” fans will fill up with nostalgia.
The official also released the list of staff and cast when the trailer premiered. Studio Liden Films (Tokyo Revengers) will be in charge of this anime production with Hideyo Yamamoto (Strike the Blood) at its helm. Hideyuki Kurata wrote the script (Made in Abyss). Terumi Nishii (Knight of the Zodiac: Saint Seiya) will serve as character designer while Takami Yuu (Rainbow: Criminal Seven of Compound Two Cell Six) will compose the music.
The cast of Rurouni Kenshin is as follows:
- Soma Saito as Himura Kenshin
- Rie Takahashi as Kaoru Kamiya
- Makoto Koichi as Yahiko Myoujin
- Taku Yashiro as Sagara Sanosuke
Story
Ten years have passed since the end of Bakumatsu, the era of great rebellion against the Tokugawa shogunate. The new age of Meiji has come, and the peace the rebels longed for should have been achieved. Alas, the new people rising in power are busy filling their pockets with money.
Even though there is a law against holding an arm in broad daylight, the street murder act is still a often occurrence. This doesn’t help that one wandering samurai is going around with his sword in the scabbard.
Unknown to others, this wandering samurai, Rurouni Kenshin, is the most fearsome rebellion fighter who slashes countless enemies. He believes that what he did in the war is a necessary sacrifice yet he also understands that the blood in his hand can’t be washed off. So, he wanders around trying to atone for his sin.
Conclusion
Rurouni Kenshin reboot is one of the most awaited anime reboots after a long list of reboots in the last decade. The series had a huge impact on 1990’s anime list. With Hunter X Hunter having a complete reboot, fans expect that the anime will continue until the end.
With the latest trailer being released, it is clear that the anime gets a huge improvisation in the visuals. However, we should be aware that not all of the anime reboot series end up successful. Will it follow the path of Hunter X Hunter? Well, just stay tuned for more future anime news in Animefleek!
