The Fall of 2023 is undeniably one of the best anime seasons in the last couple of years. A bunch of great new projects and numerous sequels made this year’s end unforgettable. Among the animes currently ruling the anime industry is Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury. This mecha anime is the fifteenth in Sunrise’s long Gundam franchise.
The Witch from Mercury is the first anime production in seven years since Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans, as well as the first anime in the franchise with a female protagonist.
Sunrise first announced the anime at the second Gundam Conference on September 15, 2021. A teaser PV was released on March 29, 2022, revealing the main mecha and protagonist.

The Witch from Mercury officially premiered on all JNN stations in Japan on October 22, 2022. The anime also has a prologue episode that aired on July 14, 2022.
As for the trailer, there are two of them. Gundaminfo YouTube channel released the first short teaser trailer on July 22. The second trailer appeared right before the premiere, i.e. on September 4, 2022.

Suletta Mercury leaves her planet and goes to the Asticassia School of Technology at the behest of her mother. There, students fight in duels to decide who is right and who is wrong. The best duelist will receive Miorine Rembran as a fiancee.

Her current fiance demands that Miorine moves in with him, however, Suletta does not approve and they engage in a duel. She emerges victorious. however, under suspicion of using the banned “Gundam” mecha, she is arrested.
Not wanting to suffer any more injustice, Miorine proposes another duel with an even higher stake. Now Sulietta must win one more time to stay in school.
The mecha genre is famous for good fights, but also complex political themes. Such is the case with The Witch From Mercury. That is why the main themes of the anime are precisely the dangers of new technologies as well as political corruption, criticism of capitalism, and revenge.
Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury Staff and Cast
Studio Sunrise, known for its long mecha franchise, is responsible for the animation of the anime. The staff consists of director Hiroshi Kobayashi, with Ryo Ando as co-director. Ichiro Okouchi oversees and writes the scripts. He is known for several mecha anime, including Code Geass, and has also worked on SK8 Infinity, Princess Principal, and Devilman Crybaby.
Mogmo designs the characters, and Marie Tagashira, Shuri Toida, and Hirotoshi Takaya adapt them. JNTHED, Kanetake Ebikawa, Wataru Inada, Ippei Gyōbu, Kenji Teraoka, and Takayuki Yanase are hendeling the mecha designs.
Takashi Ohmama composed the music for the series. Joasobi performed the opening “Shukufuku”, while Shiyui and Ryo performed the ending “Kimi yo Kedakaku Are”.
The cast members are very talented actors who contribute to the atmosphere of the show. The protagonist Suletta, is voiced by Kana Ichinose. She is best known for her role as Ichigo in Darling in the Franx, and also appeared in Kaguya-Sama Love is War as Maki Shijo, and in Dr. Stone as Yuzuriha Ogawa.
Lynn voices the other main character, Miorine Rembran. She has already appeared in Sunrise’s mecha franchise in the anime Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans. In addition, she had roles in Naruto Shippuden, Magi, Bungou Stray Dogs, The Promised Neverland, etc.
As for other roles, Yōhei Azakami will voice Guel Jeturk, Natsuki Hanae as Elan Ceres, Makoto Furukawa as Shaddiq Zenelli, Yume Miyamoto as Nika Nanaura, Miyu Tomita as Chuatury Panlunch.
Is Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury yuri?
Already in its first episode, The Witch from Mercury hinted at a potential Yuri story. Due to circumstances and school rules, Suletta became Miorine’s new fiance, which does seem to bother the other girl.
Even fans of Lycoris Recoil declared the new Gundam to be the queer successor of this anime. As the episodes progress, it seems more and more that this is not just baiting, but a real Yuri romance.
