The Monthly Shonen Magazine announced on March 6 that the Pumpkin Scissors manga series will return in the magazine’s upcoming issue on April 6. It has been 4 years since the manga entered a hiatus in March 2020.
The manga series is created by Ryoutarou Iwanaga and was released in Kodansha’s Magazine Great in 2002. The series the later moved to Monthly Shonen Magazine in 2006. Kondansha released 23 compiled volume of the manga back in November 2019. The English version of the manga is published by Kodansha USA and recently released the 23rd compiled digital volume in July 2020.
Kodansha USA describes the manga series:
“The bitter war between the Empire and the Republic of Frost has ended, but three years after the ceasefire, the Empire is still ravaged by starvation and disease, and bandits terrorize the populace. Can the Imperial Army State Section III, aka Pumpkin Scissors, stop a renegade force with chemical weapons? And who is the mysterious stranger helping Pumpkin Scissors?”
The manga was later adapted into an anime television series produced by Gonzo, which aired from October 2006 to March 2007. The anime consists of 24 episodes and closely follows the storyline of the manga.
The series is set in a fictional post-war European country, where a ceasefire has been declared after a devastating conflict known as the “Great War.” However, the aftermath of the war has left the country in ruins, with widespread poverty, famine, and social unrest. In this turbulent period, Pumpkin Scissors, a special government military unit, is formed to aid in the country’s reconstruction efforts and to maintain peace.
The story primarily revolves around the members of Pumpkin Scissors, led by the idealistic Second Lieutenant Alice L. Malvin. Alongside her loyal comrades, including the charismatic Corporal Randel Oland and the resourceful Sergeant Major Mercury, they embark on missions to investigate corruption, suppress riots, and provide humanitarian aid to the war-torn population.
As they delve deeper into their assignments, Pumpkin Scissors uncovers various conspiracies and dark secrets hidden within the government and military establishment. Their journey is fraught with challenges as they confront powerful adversaries, including corrupt officials, war profiteers, and remnants of the wartime regime. Despite facing overwhelming odds, the members of Pumpkin Scissors remain steadfast in their commitment to justice and the welfare of the people they serve.
