At AnimeJapan 2024, the team behind the beloved Magical DoReMi (Ojamajo Doremi) magical girl anime unveiled a special video in celebration of its 25th anniversary. This video showcased brand-new animated scenes depicting the main characters as they progress through life.
Junichi Satō, the director of the original anime, crafted the storyboard for the new video. While Tatsuya Nagamine, an episode director from the original series, took the helm as director. Yoshihiko Umakoshi returned to lend his talent in character design and served as the animation director. Additionally, Sho from YZ Entertainment is credited for the choreography.
The official website for the anime’s 25th anniversary had previously announced the debut of this video on January 19.
Originally premiering in Japan in 1999, the first Ojamajo Doremi anime series captured hearts, while a heavily edited version titled Magical DoReMi aired in the United States in 2005 by 4Kids.
In 2019, the franchise commemorated its 20th anniversary with the “Ojamajo Doremi 20th Anniversary Carnival,” a special event held at the Tokyo International Forum Hall C. The celebration included a variety of activities such as concerts, stage readings, live drawing events, and talk shows featuring voice actresses and staff from the anime.
Additionally, the anime film Looking for Magical DoReMi (Majo Minarai o Sagashite), created to honor the 20th anniversary, debuted in 2020 after facing delays. It received critical acclaim, earning the prestigious Best Animation Film award at the 75th Mainichi Film Awards in 2021.
About Magical DoReMi
Magic Doremi, also known as Ojamajo Doremi, is a Japanese magical girl anime television series created by Toei Animation. It was directed by Junichi Sato and produced by Toei Animation. The series premiered on TV Asahi on February 7, 1999, and concluded on January 30, 2000, spanning a total of four seasons.
The show follows the adventures of Dorie Goodwyn, a young girl who discovers that her life is about to change drastically when she encounters a magical shop owned by a witch named Majorika. After inadvertently witnessing Majorika’s apprentice, Doremi Harukaze, using magic to solve a problem, Dorie begs Majorika to turn her into a witch apprentice as well. Although initially reluctant, Majorika eventually agrees, and Dorie becomes a witch apprentice alongside her friends Hazuki Fujiwara and Aiko Senoo.
Throughout the series, the trio encounters various challenges and adventures as they learn about magic and strive to become full-fledged witches. They navigate through the ups and downs of friendship, facing moral dilemmas, and dealing with the consequences of their magical actions.
