Deadline announced on Monday that Keanu Reeves will be joining the ensemble of the live-action Sonic the Hedgehog 3 movie, portraying Shadow the Hedgehog. Variety had previously confirmed in February that Jim Carrey will return as Dr. Robotnik for the third installment.
In addition, IGN reported that Krysten Ritter, Alyla Browne, James Wolk, Sofia Pernas, Cristo Fernández, and Jorma Taccone are set to join the cast for the new Sonic The Hedgehog 3. Among the returning cast members are Ben Schwartz, Lee Majdoub, Idris Elba, Colleen O’Shaughnessey, Tom Butler, James Marsden, and Tika Sumpter.
Scheduled for release on December 20, the film has garnered much anticipation. However, the Knuckles spinoff series, initially slated for a 2023 debut on Paramount Pictures’ Paramount+ streaming service, has been postponed to 2024, with its premiere set for April 26.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 made a splash upon its U.S. release in April 2022, raking in an estimated US$26.5 million on its opening day, according to Box Office Mojo. The sequel dominated in 47 markets worldwide, including the U.K., France, and Australia, accumulating over US$400 million within its first three months. As of now, the film’s global earnings stand at US$405,421,518, cementing its status as the highest-grossing video game adaptation in U.S. history until April 2022 (a record now overtaken by The Super Mario Bros. Movie).
The original Sonic the Hedgehog film, released in February 2020, debuted at #1 during its Presidents’ Day holiday opening weekend in the U.S., amassing a total of US$70,002,074. Ben Schwartz lent his voice to the titular character Sonic, while James Marsden and Tika Sumpter starred alongside him. Jim Carrey portrayed the nefarious Dr. Robotnik, with Idris Elba bringing Knuckles to life and Colleen O’Shaughnessey reprising her role as Tails.
