The most anticipated sequel in the summer anime lineup was finally broadcasted in Japan. Of course, like the first season, the opening and ending theme by MAPPA is becoming the center of attention. Yet, they don’t fail anyone’s expectations.
Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 will have 23 episodes and the first 5 will follow Gojo’s Past Arc. This will be a sequel to the story of Jujutsu Kaisen Zero the movie, which again, it’s funny because the movie was supposed to be the sequel of the first season.
Because of this arc’s focus, the entire opening and ending will likely change in the sixth episode. Before that happens, let’s talk about the opening and ending themes of Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2!
Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 Opening
TOHO Animation released the creditless version of the opening on their YouTube channel on July 6, 2023. It surpassed 6 million views on the third day of the release.
The opening theme is performed by Tatsuya Kitani entitled “Ao no Sumika” (Where Our Blue Is). He was also the singer of Scar, the opening of Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War, and Seija no Koushin, Idanten Deities.
The opening starts with how close Gojo and Geto were in their school days. Along with Shouko, their classmate, Nanami and Yu, their junior, they seemed to have a satisfying high school life. There is no indication something goes wrong in the opening. Yet, we know how it will turn out at the end (See Jujutsu Kaisen the Movie).
But, it is different if you’re looking at the lyrics. While clapping scene, the lyric said that “these days will fade away” and “Even though I’ve come to know the scent of you being different from mine”. It highlights how that “clap” will make Geto question his kindness, which further breaks his relationship with Gojo.
The song ends with Gojo and Geto smiling yet the lyric said “We’ll meet again, right? in an unvoiced voice”. This further proves that Gojo doesn’t really hate Geto even though he strays from his path. The movie also implied that Gojo didn’t curse him even on his deathbed.
Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 Ending
Face it. Making a memorable ending theme is much harder than the opening theme. The total views on YouTube also show that the ending theme only has been watched 1.3 million times in three days.
It is paled in comparison with the opening scene which surpassed 6.9 million at the same time. But, it doesn’t mean it’s bad. The song feels so serene indicating the duo’s relationship in this arc.
The ending theme is performed by Soushi Sakiyama entitled Akari (Light). He also sang the ending of My Hero Academia 5th Season and Seiin High School Boys Volleyball Team.
In the end, both the opening and ending themes exceeded fans’ expectations by a lot. It’s amazing that this kind of quality theme is only for the early 5 episodes. It makes us wonder, what they prepare for the next arc. Fortunately, Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 is streaming exclusively on Crunchyroll.
