A 36-year-old interior decorator named Yoshihiro Yamakawa has been arrested by Kyoto police on suspicion of violating Japan’s Unfair Competition Prevention Act. The accusation revolves around his purported sale of altered versions of Pokémon within the Pokemon Violet game for Nintendo Switch.
Yamakawa was apprehended during a cyber patrol conducted on April 9 in Uji City. It is alleged that he utilized specialized tools to modify the abilities of Pokémon and subsequently sold them for approximately 13,000 yen (US$84) each between December 2022 and March 2023. It’s reported that he amassed millions of yen from these transactions. When questioned, Yamakawa claimed he resorted to these sales for financial support.
The Pokémon Scarlet/Violet games made their global debut on the Switch in November 2022.
Pokémon Scarlet and Pokemon Violet are role-playing video games developed by Game Freak and published by Nintendo and The Pokémon Company for the Nintendo Switch. The games are part of the main series of Pokémon titles and serve as the ninth generation of Pokémon games.
The games mark the debut of the ninth generation of Pokémon, introducing new Pokémon species, characters, and gameplay mechanics.
Pokemon Horizons: The Series anime premiered in Japan in April 2023 with a one-hour first-episode special. The anime started its second arc, “Terapagos no Kagayaki” (The Brilliance of Terapagos), with its 29th episode on October 27 in Japan.
The Pokémon Company originally announced that the anime would debut on Netflix in the U.S. on February 23, but the series debuted instead on March 7.
The anime follows completely new dual protagonists, who are named Liko and Roy. The anime features Sprigatito, Fuecoco, and Quaxly from the Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet video games, and also features the Legendary Pokémon Rayquaza in its Shiny form.
