Frontwing made an announcement on Thursday regarding the premiere of Grisaia: Phantom Trigger the Animation, the television anime adaptation of its Grisaia: Phantom Trigger game, slated for 2024. Alongside the announcement, the company revealed a visual showcasing the upcoming anime.
The anime will see the return of the original cast from the 2019 original video anime (OVA), including Maaya Uchida as Rena, Ayane Sakura as Tohka, Kaori Nazuka as Christina, and Atsumi Tanezaki as Murasaki. Bibury Animation Studio, responsible for animating the game’s OVA and sequel adaptations, will once again take charge of producing the television anime.
The Grisaia: Phantom Trigger OAV adaptation debuted in Japan in March 2019, with Frontwing later releasing an English dub. Notably, anime director Tensho established the new animation studio Bibury Animation Studio to helm this project as its inaugural work, overseeing both writing and scripting. Akio Watanabe served as the anime’s character designer and chief animation director, while Ryuichiro Yamakawa spearheaded planning and production. Frontwing opted to independently fund the anime instead of relying on a production committee.
Moreover, the Campfire crowdfunding campaign for Grisaia: Phantom Trigger the Animation Stargazer, the sequel to the anime, quickly achieved its 10 million yen (about US$92,000) goal within 24 hours of its launch in July 2019. It subsequently premiered in Japanese theaters in November 2020, with each episode originally planned to span 60 minutes, adapting one volume of the original visual novel. The anime’s cast reprised their roles from the previous installment.
Sekai Project initially launched Frontwing’s The Fruit of Grisaia on Steam in 2015, following a successful Kickstarter campaign for a Western release of the game trilogy. Subsequently, Frontwing and Sekai Project released The Labyrinth of Grisaia and The Eden of Grisaia on Steam. Additionally, Frontwing released the bonus episode “The Leisure of Grisaia” on Steam in May 2016.
All three main games in the series have inspired anime and manga adaptations. The latest installment, Grisaia: Phantom Trigger, concluded with its eighth and final volume for PC in February 2022. Frontwing initially released the first two volumes of the game with English text for PC via Steam in April 2017, coinciding with their release in Japan. With the OAV adaptation of Grisaia: Phantom Trigger having premiered in Japan in March 2019, and Frontwing subsequently releasing an English dub, the anticipation for Grisaia: Phantom Trigger the Animation, a new television anime based on the game, continues to grow as it undergoes production.
