In an unexpected turn of events, Square Enix has joined forces with Nissin Foods for the latest installment of the Donbei udon commercial series. This unique commercial showcases characters from the renowned Final Fantasy VII (FFVII) Remake series. While the role of the young man is filled by none other than the iconic FFVII protagonist, Cloud Strife, the identity of the charming Dongitsune adds an element of surprise and humor to the mix.
On February 25, Donbei took to Twitter to unveil an exciting collaboration between FFVII and Nissin Foods. The tweet playfully teased fans about who would take on the role of Dongitsune in the FFVII collaboration commercial: “Tifa, Aerith…who’s up for Dongitsune?” Anticipation mounted among FFVII enthusiasts, but the mystery was swiftly unraveled in a subsequent tweet on February 28: “After careful consideration, here’s what we’ve come up with…”
According to Nissin Foods’ website, there was quite a debate among the staff during the commercial planning phase. Arguments ensued over whether Tifa, Aerith, or even Yuffie would fit the role. However, the deadlock was broken when one staff member proposed an unexpected candidate: “Why not Sephiroth?” It was as if Sephiroth himself, with his iconic line “Accept it, I am the one who will guide you,” intervened in the discussion. Ultimately, the enigmatic antagonist, the one-winged angel and beloved tortured soul, Sephiroth, was selected to portray Dongitsune in the commercial.
The commercial can be found on the Nissin Foods Group YouTube channel, featuring the following dialogue:
Sephiroth (S): Cloud, I have a favor to ask of you. Won’t you eat some Donbei?
Cloud (C): …I’m not interested.
S: Cloud, eat Donbei.
C: Give it a rest!
S: Whenever you see Dongitsune remember, the one who guides you is Dongitsune. Dongitsune is always by your side. Donbei… Donbei… Donbei…
C: (grunts in pain) (slurps noodles) (heals 7,777 hit points)
S: Good boy.
S: Shall I give you Donbei?
The commercial incorporates various scenes from Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, notably including Cloud’s encounter with Sephiroth after the first Mako factory’s destruction. Perhaps the most amusing aspect is the replacement of FFVII’s iconic meteor with a piece of deep-fried abura-age tofu. The entertainment value is further enhanced for those familiar with the history of the Donbei commercial series.
Final Fantasy VII Remake is a role-playing video game developed and published by Square Enix. Serving as a reimagining of the classic 1997 PlayStation game Final Fantasy VII, it was released for the PlayStation 4 console in April 2020.
